Brekkie ... with the Incas!

The National Gallery of Australia currently has an exhibition called Gold and the Incas: Lost Worlds of Peru. When we went online to buy tickets, we noticed that one of the options on weekends was to start the day with a Peruvian-style breakfast. Sounded fabulous, and it was! Brekkie was served in the delightful Sculpture Garden Restaurant, which (true to its name) is set among the Gallery's extensive collection of outdoor sculptures.

There were two courses, one hot and one cold, and each consisted of a trio of Peruvian goodies.

The first course included (left to right) raw
cacao and almond granola; mango ceviche
with basil; and cinnamon sugar sopaipilla

Next, we ate (clockwise, from left) baked eggs with
braised chorizo, peppers and lima beans; quinotto and potato
hash; and baked tamalito with quessa fresco

It also came with a choice of drinks (we had coffee). We enjoyed both the meal and the setting. Oh, and the exhibition was excellent! The Incas and their predecessor cultures produced some wonderfully quirky art. Although we go to most of the 'blockbuster' exhibitions at the National Gallery  one of the many perks of living in Canberra  this was the first time we'd eaten there. It won't be the last. They did a fabulous job.

Gallery staff clearly had fun decorating
the restaurant for the exhibition, too

The Gold and the Incas exhibition finishes on 21 April 2014. Don't miss it.

Karin - I would love to see this exhibition - and the breakfast sounds fab!
I once enjoyed a Peruvian feast here in Sydney, organised by the gorgeous Maeve O'Meara, and it is still one of my best foodie memories :-)

Ooooh, I loved Maeve O'Meara's Asian Food Safari shows. She's so passionate about food!

I definitely recommend both the exhibition and the restaurant, if you get a chance to go. There's also a fabulous exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery at the moment: www.portrait.gov.au/site/exhibition_subsite_elvis.php.

Well worth a weekend in Canberra ;-)

Oooh, the Peruvian brekkie sounds wonderful! My mum used to make plain sopaipillas whenever we had chilli ... I have her recipe for them, and many fond memories of making them. They are great hot and daubed with honey, too!
