Micahel Pollan's 'Food Rules'

I was in two minds about whether to write yesterday's post about vegetarian tacos. I usually try to cook everything from scratch, so feel a bit embarrassed to admit to occasionally resorting to something called a 'taco kit'! It got me thinking about processed foods. Which ones are OK in moderation, and which ones should we avoid like the plague?

Michael Pollan wrote a lovely little book called Food Rules a couple of years ago, and his advice (summarised here) seems sound. One of his 'rules' (#39) is 'eat all the junk food you want as long as you cook it yourself'. So maybe that's how I'll look at the (rare) appearance of things like taco kits in my kitchen ... it is a way to get a junk food fix, yet still more healthy, frugal and environmentally-friendly than buying it from a takeaway shop. Mr Pollan's book is excellent and well worth a look.

Greg was given this book as a gift from the chef at Google on his first day. I skimmed through it and it makes a lot of sense. I like #36 - dont eat breakfast cereals that change the color of the milk!

Hey Emily ... thanks for popping by! There is a chef at Google?! ;-)

Hope life in San Francisco is treating you well. You're missed at the warehouse!

P.S. are you blogging yet? I'd be interested in following your adventures ...
