Fig and cinnamon porridge, and a long black
She had:
Corn cakes with bacon and maple syrup, and a flat white
I'm not sure why they bother adding the rather kitsch white toast to the corn cakes. The serving size is big enough without it, and the corn cakes – which feature whole corn kernels, and little chunks of red capsicum – are delicious. Let's just declare the toast superfluous!
We've also tried a bunch of other menu and blackboard items over the years, and can recommend the home made baked beans, the pancakes, the mushrooms on toast and the salmon eggs benedict. It can be quite popular, so we usually try to arrive early (before 9 am) on a Sunday to be sure to get a table.
Fun fact: did you know that 'essen' is the German word for 'eat'? It is also the name of a city in Germany. That said, the Canberra cafe doesn't seem to have a particularly German theme ...
Update: Sunday 13 October 2013
We popped into Essen for brekkie today en route to Floriade. This time, he had:
Pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, and a long black
while she had:
Eggs Benedict with smoked salmon, and a flat white
All good. I liked that the eggs were properly cooked, while Andrew did a happy dance to finally have bacon again after two weeks in Malaysia and Singapore.
Oh, and here are a couple of pics from Floriade, if you're interested ...
