Kids in the kitchen

One of my local primary schools is part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program and has recently set up a vegetable garden and kitchen, so little kids can grown and cook their own food. I've been volunteering in the kitchen, and it is seriously cool! It is lovely to watch the kids (aged between about eight and eleven) develop cooking skills and a passion for food, and amazing to see what they can do when they put their minds to it, and are encouraged to "give it a go". Today's menu included pumpkin gnocchi, a fabulous beetroot-y salad, and scones with lemon butter. All were melt-in-your-mouth good. Full marks to Stephanie Alexander for the idea, and to all the lovely teachers and volunteers out there for running this great scheme.
